수퍼컴 역사에서 빼놓을 수 없는 회사가 컨트롤 데이터와 크레이다. 지금이야 IBM이 큰 시스템을 많이 만들고 있지만 예전엔 컨트롤 데이터가 그랬다. 그리고 컨트롤 데이터사의 핵심 엔지니어였던 시모어 크레이(Seymour Cray)가 나중에 따로 크레이라는 회사를 만들었다. 이미 크레이는 사망했고, 이제 윌리엄 모리스(Willian Norris)도 사망했다. 떠나는 멋진 영웅들에게 박수를 보낸다.

거대 메인프레임 회사 컨트롤 데이터 사를 설립하고 최초로 상용 슈퍼컴퓨터를 만들었던 윌리엄 노리스가 향년 95세의 나이로 사망했다.

노리스는 1964년 타 상용 컴퓨터보다 10배나 빠른 최초의 슈퍼컴퓨터 CDC6600를 포함하여 IT 분야에서 무수한 성공을 일궈냈다. 또한 1984년 50억 달러 규모였던, 세계에서 4번째로 큰 데이터 프로세싱 회사인 컨트롤 데이터 설립의 공신이기도 했다.

그 전에 노리스는 제 2차 세계대전에서 미 해군을 위해 암호 해독을 연구 했고 스페리 사의 세계 최초 시판용 컴퓨터인 유니백 사업부문을 운영했다.

사회적 개혁부문에서 그가 보였던 노력들은 상대적으로 덜 알려졌는데 컨트롤 데이터 사는 그 당시 생소하게 여겨졌던 직원 자녀의 보육시설을 제공했다. 또한 1960년대 폭동으로 피폐해진 빈민지역의 공장을 설립하는 프로젝트에 관여했다. 컨트롤 데이터 사를 벗어나서도 그는 풍력발전, 알래스카에서 농업 사업계획 및 과거 죄수였던 이들에게 자동차를 대여하는 프로젝트를 장려했다.

CDC6600은 IBM을 위협했고 34명으로 팀을 구성해 바로 이 컴퓨터를 구축했던 엔지니어 세이무어 크레이의 이름을 널리 알렸던 일종의 상징적인 기기였다. 수 백 명의 엔지니어로도 IBM은 이 제품에 필적할 수 없어 FUD(공포, 불확실성 및 의혹)으로 이를 죽이려 했지만 자사의 시스템/360 메인프레임 라인에서 더 빠른 모델을 완성시키지 못했다.

노리스는 IBM을 상대로 반독점 소송을 제기하여 결국 6억 달러를 받아내면서 고객을 위해 외주 제작된 데이터 프로세싱을 운영했던 IBM의 핵심계열사인 서비스 국을 획득했다. 한창 때 컨트롤 데이터 사는 디스크와 기타 주변장비를 제조했고 IBM의 제품보다 10퍼센트 먼저 그리고 10퍼센트 싸게 제품을 내놓으면서 IBM을 크게 따돌렸다.

1972년 크레이는 컨트롤 데이터 사를 떠나 자신의 회사를 설립했고 이 회사의 제품은 시중 제품 중 가장 빠른 컴퓨터라는 영예를 안게 되었다.

1960년대 및 1970년대에 일어난 메인프레인 붐으로 컨트롤 데이터 사는 플라토라 불리는 컴퓨터 기반의 교육 시스템 구축을 위한 10억 달러 프로젝트나 노리스의 사회 프로젝트 같은 대형 프로젝트의 자금을 조달할 수 있었다.

1980년대 잔인한 현실이 맞물리기 시작하면서 노리스는 적대적 경영권 취득으로 불거진 사회적 파탄에 강력히 대항하자면서 규제기관은 그들이 사회에서 얻는 이득을 기초로 합병을 승인해야 한다고 제안했다. 그러나 그 말은 컨트롤 데이터 사의 현실이 되었다. 1985년 4억 달러의 손실을 기록하면서 전체 직원 중 2/3을 해고하게 되었다.

1988년 컨트롤 데이터 사는 성공적이었던 자사의 하드디스크 사업부문을 헐값에 팔아치워 1989년 시게이트 테크놀러지가 이를 매각했다. 이 기업의 나머지 부문은 BT의 글로벌 서비스 계열사인 Syntegra(미국)가 되면서 IT역사상 가장 치욕스러운 운명에 처하게 되었다.

노리스는 네브라스카주의 레드 클라우드에서 성장했고 전기공학 학위를 따기 전까지는 아마추어 무선사였다. 제 2차 세계대전 동안 미 해군의 암호 해독 계산기를 연구하면서 그는 컴퓨터 산업이 태동할 무렵 앞 자리에 있었고 전쟁 후 해군의 자금지원으로 ERA를 설립했다. ERA는 랜드 사에 의해, 랜드 사는 스페리 사에 의해 매각되었고 스페리 사는 노리스에게 자사의 상용 컴퓨터 부문인 유니백을 맡겼다.

노리스는 미네소타 주 블루밍턴의 한 요양원에서 8월 21일 사망했다.@
